Ridiculous being of the Ministry of Diaspora in Armenia

First, we most certainly do not even need such a Ministry. I am not entirely sure what this ministry supposed to accomplish. All the functions of the ministry could and should be successfully done by other relevant government bodies. Just because we have the “Ministry of Diaspora” does not provide with any more significance to Armenia’s relations with the Diaspora. This is simply blah-blah-blah.

But wait... Apparently there is one strategically significant task of national importance that the ministry must accomplish. A beauty contest. Proudly announced by the Minister Hranush Hakobyan herself.

When government (any government) is involved in organising a beauty contest it surely is making a laughing stock out of itself. Any criticism or mockery of such decision would be an understatement.

But wait, here is the most hilarious part of the announcement. Apparently, not only potential all-Armenian beauties will be judged by their, well, look, but also... by morality... I wonder how the judges will decide whether the contestant is ‘moral’ enough or not to suit the requirements. Using gynaecological chair?

Truly, the winner of this pan-Armenian beauty contest must receive as a prize the “Red Apple”.

Zara - Karmir Khndzor (‘Red Apple’)

P.S. Quote from Lragir (AM):

I think I know where she got the idea--now, my question is: Do they have to do the sheep (goat, whatever) butchering part in the Armenian version? :)) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,312229,00.html

Traditional Armenian Woman is Good Mother, Daughter, Wife: RA Diaspora Minister

[...] According to the minister, in addition to being beautiful, contestants are expected to have 'mastered' the Armenian language, to be familiar with Armenian cuisine (including how to cook Armenian food), and to top it off, to "preserve the image of an Armenian woman."

Upon Epress.am's request, Hakobyan attempted to explain what defines "the image of an Armenian woman."

"To tell you the truth, I don't accept filthy, ill-mannered girls," promised the minister. According to her, a woman must be "modest."

"I also don't accept journalists who raise their pens and attempt to write filth about the traditional Armenian image in the papers," concluded the diaspora minister.

Continuing, Hakobyan informed the Epress.am journalist that the beauty contest is organized upon request by Armenian Diasporan youth:

"That means youth activity on the spot, attitude toward the homeland, it means strengthening ties between Diaspora and Diaspora, strengthening ties between Armenian and Diasporan youth."

The minister said that professional agencies are organizing the contest and they will develop the criteria.

"Really good things can be portrayed in these processes of globalization, while the bad is not reproduced. The world is changing very quickly, it's getting smaller. We can see and comprehend all the social phenomena of different countries, but the traditional Armenian woman is a good mother, a good daughter, a good wife. All her actions, really, are balanced and measured," she said, expressing a wish that the Armenian woman always "be within [her] limits."
